Jewelry at WP Shelton Jewelers
Are you frantically running around, trying to think of the best gift idea for the special mom in your life? Are you losing sleep at night thinking what you bought is not as great as your amazing mother/spouse/partner/friend? Whether she is a perfectly practical mom, a super soccer mom or a glamour girl, we have many jewelry items that will surely put a memorable smile on her face. Wearable timeless keepsakes really are the perfect solution, as they can be passed down from one generation to the next.
Being a mom is an ever-growing job. With each passing milestone, moms earn badges right alongside their kids. She deserves a gift continually reminding her of how much she is loved, appreciated and all the joy she brings to this world.
Essentially, there are three categories of jewelry for moms:
- Subtle jewelry
- Unique jewelry
To help you decide which to choose, think about what kind of jewelry she would appreciate the most. If you think she would wear and enjoy something emphasizing motherhood and family, a more sentimental piece would be best (i.e. birthstone bands). On the other hand, if her jewelry tends to be more on the subtle side, gift her favorite jewelry style (i.e. stud earrings). Then there is always jewelry which symbolizes her unique qualities(i.e. custom designed jewelry).
Below we have listed out six of the best gifts for ANY mom.
1 - Lockets
– These charms allow you to add pictures and/or engrave them to keep the ones she loves close to her heart. (Great for our mushy sentimental mommas!)
2 - Bracelets
– These are great for our multitasking mommas who wear many hats! With multiple sets, she can play it simple while out and about during the day, or dress it up for a fancy night out.
3 - Family jewelry
– Gift her with a birthstone representing each of her children/grandchildren, or even a baby’s footprint! No matter where she goes, or what she is doing, this sentimental mom will always have a reminder of all her family.
4 - Stackable rings
– Remind her of all the little and big ones who love her. Great for all ages. Plus, they can be worn to BBQ’s or to a night at the opera!
5 - Stud earrings
– Stud earrings, whether they are diamonds or pearls, are great for our practical moms. They are simple, yet always so elegant and beautiful. A great choice for moms on-the-go.
6 - Custom designed jewelry
– Just like your "one-of-a-kind” mom, create a piece as unique as her. She will appreciate the time and effort put into creating something as special as her love.
All of the ideas are timeless styles, perfect for passing down as heirlooms in your family.
While moms should be appreciated every day of the year, gifting jewelry is a great opportunity to show how grateful you are for everything she has done.

Our fine jewelry, and even our fashion jewelry, are often some of our most prized possessions. Passed down through generations or given to us by our spouse, preserving and caring for your jewelry is an important part of actually owning it.
So maybe you just got engaged, and are wondering "how am I going to keep the shine and sparkle in this beautiful ring?" Or maybe you are doing a little spring cleaning and have come across an old heirloom spoon ring your mother gave you 15+ years ago, telling yourself "I wish I would have taken better care of this." Either way, we are here to help guide you take some simple, and very beneficial steps to caring for your jewelry!
Most of us are not aware of how to take care of fine jewelry, nor do we realize what all is harmful to our jewelry. Having the appropriate jewelry box and cases are very important to preserving jewelry (high quality or fashion). Below we have listed out, with detail, the appropriate steps to taking care of your jewelry. We hope you enjoy!
1 –Choose a jewelry box with a soft lining and one that can keep pieces separate
Start by selecting a jewelry box that provides the best protection for your jewelry, like a storage option with a solid exterior, as it provides added protection. Don't forget the purpose of all those dividers are to prevent scratches on settings, kinks in chains, tarnishing of silver and damaged gemstones. A place to hang necklaces is ideal for storing and can prevent a jumbled mess. If at any point your jewelry begins to touch each other, opt for a bigger box or a free-standing jewelry armoire. Another added benefit to proper jewelry storage is prevention of stolen jewelry by thieves.
2 – Store jewelry types separately
All jewelry is unique and deserves special attention - after all, they are wearable works of art, aren't they? With fine jewelry, like diamonds, pearls and colored gemstones, each has its own specifications when it comes to storage. As do gold, platinum and sterling silver metals. Diamonds by nature are the hardest gemstone. For this very reason it is best to keep diamond jewelry stored separately in soft cloth pouches. Pearls are fragile and soft. Meaning they must have an extra soft interior space for storing. As a general rule of thumb, colored gemstones should be cleaned with a damp cloth after wearing and before storing away. This helps with the preservation of the stones. Gold jewelry can be easily damaged by scratches from hard gemstones (i.e. diamonds). Keep gold jewelry stored separately in soft cloth bags or in their original boxes. Though platinum jewelry is exceptionally strong, this does not mean they do not receive special attention when it comes to storing. Platinum can still be scratched, so these items should also be stored separately. Silver jewelry has a tendency to oxidize over time. Therefore, silver jewelry should always be kept completely dry, inside tarnish-proof cloths and away from any exposure to air.
3 – Provide the best environment
Avoid extreme temperatures and humidity, and direct sunlight. It is best to store jewelry in cool, clean and dry places. Excessive heat and direct sunlight, overtime, can cause some metals and gemstones to change colors. Humidity can also have adverse effects on jewelry. It can cause clasp weakening and can harm certain gemstones. Avoiding hair sprays, makeup, lotions, powders, soaps, etc. are necessary precautions to take with providing the best environment possible for jewelry.
4 – Keep jewelry stored away while cleaning inside with chemicals, outside in the yard and while swimming
The chemicals in household products, such as bleach, and the chemicals in pools/hot tubs, such as chlorine, can have harmful effects on metals and gemstones. It is best to not ware any jewelry at all while coming into contact with such chemicals. Keeping your jewelry stored safely inside is also a best practice while doing yard work. Too many times people have lost a gemstone or diamond because of loose prongs. Which brings us into our next suggestion...
5 – Have jewelry checked regularly and cleaned regularly by your local jeweler
On top of storing jewelry correctly and safely, this has to be one of the most important preventable actions you could take. Each time you bring your jewelry into W. P. Shelton Jewelers, we check for any loose gemstones, diamonds and prongs, while also giving it a good cleaning. We suggest setting up an appointment once a year to have the rhodium plating recoated on your white gold rings. This makes it look as if your jewelry is new again. If it has been a while since you brought your jewelry in...now is the time for some "spring cleaning!"

Qalo Rings –
These silicone rings have taken over! We love these alternative bands for both men and women who live an active lifestyle, whether at work, in the gym, or at home. They are worry and hassle free because of their lightweight design and inexpensive material.
Diamond Stud Earrings –
These studs are nothing new to the everyday gal. They offer a timeless elegance for any attire, day or night. Dress them up with a halo of more diamonds, or with a halo of colored gemstones, either way they are versatile pieces that never go out of style.
Layered Necklaces –
The layered look offers women a way to add a little dimension to their fashion. By layering three or so dainty necklaces, a soft and laid back look is easily created. Imagine a deep V-neckline shirt or dress with several layers and lengths of necklaces. These shiny things demand attention.
Stackable Rings –
The stackable rings are similar to layered necklaces in that they present a mixed and matched look, offering a laid back, confident feel. Stackable rings can be a mix of gemstone or metal colors. Either way this look can add new colors to your overall style or bring colors together in one design.
Multi Rings –
Do not let this be confused with the stacked look. With this style you are wearing one ring on each finger. Nature-themed and geometric-shaped fashion rings are among the most eye catching styles. The old saying "less is more,” does not apply to you for this look. This style screams confident and unique, all at the same time, because you are not afraid to be yourself.
Graceful and tender, pearls are some the most sophisticated jewelry a woman can wear. They have been successfully boosting a lady’s femininity for centuries, as they never go out of style. Pearls do not have to be linked together, they can be surrounded with colorful pastel gemstones, or a halo of diamonds. Pearls are traditional but can be made into modern design.
Rose Gold –
Rose gold is here to stay! Rose gold jewelry adds a new color and some personality to your everyday look. It is great by itself, or mixed with white and yellow gold. Whether worn as chunky jewelry or dainty pieces, rose gold gives others the hint of your pink passion.
The great part about feeling confident in your own skin, is staying true to your true self and style. Whether the items above are pieces you admire or not, we encourage you to stick with what you love. If you would like to turn some of your old jewelry into new pieces, stop by our store Monday through Saturday, or give us a call to set up an appointment (228-875-4842). We look forward to providing new jewelry, to the new you, for the New Year!
