Repurposing Stones & Pieces into Engagement Rings

Repurposing Stones & Pieces into Engagement Rings

Finding the perfect engagement ring is a task that every bride and her groom go through before tying the knot. From dozens of styles, settings, and mountings, it can be challenging to find a piece that speaks to you. An engagement ring is something you’ll wear and cherish for the rest of your days with your fiance. It should be a piece representing the love between the two of you and the family you are creating once the two of you marry. Many people have collected jewelry and heirlooms from their family of past engagement rings and other beloved pieces. We can rework them into an engagement ring that suits you for those who want to honor these pieces that have been passed down. When it comes to reusing a jewelry piece, there are two options to consider: repurposing the stones and remounting. We’ll go over what this means and how you can create an engagement ring out of a family heirloom.

Repurposing Stones

Passing down a cherished jewelry piece is a tradition that many families around the world take part in. So many pieces are handed down from generation to generation to brides before their wedding day. The designs of these pieces may not be in style, but they can be repurposed into a new piece if they have stones. Removing the stones from older family pieces and remounting them onto engagement rings is ideal for those who want a unique ring with sentimental value. We can rework these stones to fit your desired engagement ring style. If there is more than one stone, we can use them as accents to accentuate the center stone. We work with those who wish to repurpose a stone to find a mounting that fits their stone and style. This allows the wearer to uphold the family tradition that lies within the ring while still adding their originality.

Remounting Pieces

As we mentioned earlier, many jewelry pieces are passed down to family members as they age. However, styles change through the decades, and these pieces may need to be remounted to fit the current styles and bride's desires. Not only can the stones be salvaged from these pieces, but the mountings can as well. We can rework the rings by changing the setting, featuring more or larger diamonds, or adding an enhancer. This is an option for those who are already married but want to upgrade their current ring. Repurposing pieces is a great way to wear a cherished piece or family heirloom while also transforming it to match the bride’s taste. We’ve worked with many older pieces in the past and reworked them into a new piece that still honors the original.

Your engagement ring is a piece that you’ll treasure for the rest of your life and should be exclusive to you, so turn something old into something new by opting for a remounted or repurposed ring. If you have a family piece that was passed down to you that you don’t wear, consider having it transformed into your engagement ring. Whether you want to repurpose a stone on a family piece or remount a ring you’ve inherited, we can help rework a jewelry piece into something brand new just for you.

Taking Care of Your Jewelry

Taking Care of Your Jewelry

You take care of your home, car, and hair, so it’s no surprise that you should also put the same effort into maintaining your jewelry! If you love jewelry as much as we do, then it's more than just an accessory to you. Putting on a polished piece can make us feel refreshed and can give us an entire mood change! Over time, jewelry tarnishes and wears out naturally, but if you take the proper steps to care for your pieces, they can last for decades. Here are our tips for keeping your jewelry clean and damage-free.

  1. Avoid wearing your jewelry while working out or participating in sports, this includes gardening. While we loved to get dolled up and put on our favorite pieces, however, it’s best to avoid doing this while running, exercising, and digging in the dirt. Not only is it uncomfortable, but sweat and environmental elements can damage your jewelry.
  2. Store your jewelry in a dry place and keep it secured to avoid dust. We recommend fabric-lined jewelry boxes or cases with dividers that help separate pieces so they won’t scratch each other or get tangled with each other.
  3. Just like sweat, saltwater and chlorine can also discolor metals and erode their finish. Always to remove your jewelry before you go swimming in a pool or at the beach. It’s also a good idea not to wear jewelry in a hot tub either, as this can also tarnish your pieces.
  4. So many of our everyday products can also damage jewelry. As much we love spraying on our heavenly perfumes, lathering up in our lotions and giving the counter a swift clean with Lysol, these can harm jewelry. Things such as perfumes, hair spray, bug spray, lysol and clorox leave a film on your pieces which can cause them to tarnish and lose their shine. Additionally, lotions and cleaning solutions often get into the openings of chains and clasps, and can begin to settle in causing damage over time.
  5. While many quality metal pieces are water-resistant, other styles such as beaded or threaded pearl jewelry are not. Try not to get these kinds of pieces wet as it could tarnish their shine.

Even if you follow all of these rules and take great care of your jewelry, it is still natural for them to lose their sheen over time. When it comes to cleaning and polishing jewelry, each kind calls for different methods.

  1. For silver pieces, use silver dip cleaners. These are the best options for preserving their shine. Safely clean your pieces with these products, and be sure to dry them properly after you’re finished. Don’t use silver cleansers on other metals as it can cause irreversible damage.
  2. Clean your metal jewelry regularly. As mentioned earlier, sweat, lotions, and other elements can tarnish them, so it’s best to polish them at least once a month with a non-abrasive cloth or toothbrush and a mixture of dish detergent and warm water. This home-made jewelry cleaner solution is easy and effective at properly cleaning metal jewelry.
  3. Gemstone jewelry requires a little extra TLC and carefulness. Use a soft brush when cleaning them to avoid scratching the stones. You can use the same mixture of mild soapy water to clean these as you do metal jewelry.
  4. If your jewelry is already damaged, don’t try to clean it yourself, as it could further the damage. Take any severely tarnished or dull jewelry in for a professional cleaning (like us).

At W. P. Shelton Jewelers, we know how much jewelry can mean to you, and always invite you back into our store for complimentary cleanings!

We hope you enjoyed reading our suggestions on how to ensure your favorite pieces withhold the test of time. If you have any jewelry in need of professio

Spring Jewelry Colors

Spring Jewelry Colors

Spring is finally here! This season is all about bright and fun colors, which include your jewelry pieces. We’ve listed our favorite hues and gemstones for this spirited season. Let yourself have a little fun with your accessories this spring by adding these radiant and shimmering hues to your jewelry collection!

Bright Yellow

To kick off our favorite colors for spring pieces, we’re highlighting the cheeriest color of them all - yellow! The bright and happy feelings that this joyous color gives off are perfect for spring. Yellow exudes such a vivid tone that totally pops when it’s against muted tones and even other bright colors. Yellow topaz is an excellent gemstone that exudes this color's power, and spring is the perfect time to show it off.

Pink

Stay pretty in pink this spring! Another great color for the season is pink. Whether it’s bold and fuchsia-like or a light baby doll shade, the many shades of pink add the perfect touch of femininity and color to any looks. Pink tourmalines are gorgeous stones that have a vibrant hue that stands out amongst other pieces.

Light Blue

Blue is a beautiful color for any time of year! For spring, we especially love lighter shades such as those emitted from aquamarines and swiss blue topazes. Aquamarines have a beautiful icy hue, while swiss blue topazes shine with a bright, unique blue hue. Both of these birthstones have the ideal pop of color you want for spring.

Green

Green is one of the most prominent colors of spring, and so it should be a no-brainer to include it in your spring jewelry looks! This trendy color represents the season's blooms and life and looks beautiful when paired with other bright shades. Our favorite green shades for this season are lighter hues that resemble mint or olive. This is why peridots are the perfect gemstone for spring. The happy hue that this stone displays pairs well with other bright stones and pieces.

Purple

We’re all about the bold colors this spring which is why we’re all about the royal hue of purple jewelry! The rich, striking shade of amethysts is an excellent example of how eye-catching the color purple is. This gemstone is ideal for those who want to stand out with their jewelry!

Diamonds

Diamonds are the perfect all year round, so it’s no surprise that you should bust out the sparkles for spring! Delicate pieces like studs and tennis bracelets are perfect for pairing with vivid, bright colors and your spring pastels. The white shimmer from dainty diamonds is so elegant and the ideal accessory for your charming spring outfits!

We hope this season allows you to show off beautiful and bold hues this spring! Whether you experiment with different gemstones, metals, or just jewelry in general, we hope you shimmer with confidence and color this season with your looks!

Crafting Your Own Jewelry

Crafting Your Own Jewelry

Finding the perfect jewelry piece can be tricky. Between stones, metals, and accents, so many elements go into creating a unique piece. If you’re still searching for that one special piece, look no further! With our Online Jewelry Bar, you can create your own jewelry that is customized just for you. Our online platform lets you choose the stones, metal colors, stone shapes, carat weight, and so much more. With so many options to choose from, it may be challenging to know where to begin with crafting your own piece. In this blog, we’re here to guide you step by step, so you can enjoy the design process and enjoy watching your creation come to life!

The first phase of creating a personalized piece begins with deciding on what style of jewelry it will be. We offer bracelets, bands, pendants, rings, earrings, engagement rings, and men’s jewelry such as alternative bands, cufflinks, wedding bands, necklaces, bracelets, and tie accessories. Once you’ve decided on what type of jewelry your piece will be, you can begin to think about the details and style you want.

We suggest starting your piece by choosing a stone. If you’re not sure what stone you’d like, you can browse our collection by color and stone shapes to see all of the options available. Once you’ve decided on a gemstone, you can begin viewing all the various styles and shapes that the stone is available in.

Once you’ve selected a product and decided on a gemstone, you will have the option to choose the quality of the stone as well as its shape and setting. If the piece you’ve chosen has accent stones, you can also select the quality of those as well. From there, you’re able to choose from a variety of metals, metal colors, and their qualities. Knowing what stone you’d like will help you decide on a metal as you can coordinate the two colors.

Many of the pieces available on our platform have the option to add an engraving to the back of it. If you prefer to have a name or initial on your piece, you can pick the font and colors of the lasered engraving. This is a great option for those creating a piece as a gift or momentum!

While you are designing your piece, you can view what it will look like as you select different options. If you’re having trouble deciding on a feature, you can see what each one looks like in real-time.

You can go back and view each feature that you’ve selected and make changes as you go. Be sure to take a look at your piece as you are creating it to view what it will be like once it’s designed. After you’ve gone through and selected everything you’d like to be included on your piece, you are ready to place your order! All that's left is to submit your design and get a quote. Now, you can add ‘jewelry designer’ to your resume!

We hope this blog helps give you an idea of what designing a piece on our Online Jewelry Bar is like. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out! If you're inspired to craft your dream jewelry piece, bring it to life and start creating it today!

How to Reinvent Yourself With Jewelry

How to Reinvent Yourself With Jewelry

Putting on a beautiful piece of jewelry resonates the same feeling as stepping into a warm shower or getting a much-needed haircut - refreshed and renewed. This is why accessories like jewelry are just as important to our inner feelings and thoughts as they are to our outward appearance. If you feel that you’ve hit a rut with your looks or aren’t sure how to gain this self-assurance from jewelry, we are here to help. We know how significant jewelry can be and want you to look and feel your best! We’ve put together a few ways you can up your outfit game and switch up your favorite looks with new and old pieces.

Gemstones

No one can resist the charm of a stunning, bold gemstone piece! Gemstones are known to hold multiple properties on top of their gorgeous hues and shine. Aquamarines help instate calmness and alertness, emeralds bring loyalty and compassion, and sapphires ignite focus and wisdom. No matter what aspect of your life you want to enhance, there’s a stone for it. Whether you believe in these powers or not, you can’t deny the overwhelming beauty of these stones! The allure from gemstones alone is enough to transform a look completely. Mixing and matching various colored pieces can bring an entirely fresh ambiance to your outfits as well as a new appreciation for the pieces themselves.

Personalized Jewelry

If you’re looking for something totally unique to you, you can’t go wrong with personalized jewelry! Add a little style and individuality to your looks with a piece that shows off a bit of you. Wearing your name or initials is a sign of self-love and confidence. A simple metal personalized piece can become the new centerpiece of your accessories. The best part of this jewelry is that it never goes out of style! You can enjoy a name or initial piece for a lifetime.

Try Something New

The best way to reinvent yourself and your looks with jewelry is to try something new! Switching up your accessories can shed a whole new light on your outfits. You can do this by mixing and matching pieces you already have or with new ones. Try using different metal colors or stones to highlight the uniqueness of each piece. If all of your pieces are the same metal color or stone shape and color, it’s time to branch out and experiment with other styles. On top of this, try layering and stacking your jewelry! A single piece can appear completely different when complemented with others. Layering necklaces and bracelets creates a beautiful ensemble of pieces that blend as one. Stacking your rings can have this same effect. You can choose to match similar pieces or pick ones of varying styles to add texture and character to your looks.

So much of how we feel on the inside is determined by our appearance. Putting on a little makeup, a new outfit, or our favorite jewelry can give us a boost in confidence that we all need at times. Let your jewelry bring out the best in you! If you’re interested in remaking your looks, let us know! We are here to help you feel your very best whether that is with new jewelry, or old jewelry turned into something new! Just give us a call, 228-875-4842.

The Hues of Blue

The Hues of Blue

When it comes to gemstone colors, the varying hues of blue are unbeatable! From deep, dark tones to light, luminous shades, gemstones can come in a large assortment of blues. The attractiveness and demand for blue jewelry are easily recognizable and hard to deny. We can’t get enough of the versatility of blue gemstones. They look wonderful in any jewelry form! Here are some of the most popular and exhilarating blue-hued gemstones.

Sapphire

These beautiful gemstones are known for their deep blue hue. The September birthstone belongs to the corundum family of gemstones, which also includes rubies. Sapphires can appear in almost every color but are most commonly blue. This royal blue gemstone symbolizes nobility, truth, sincerity, and faithfulness and has frequently been associated with romance as well. Using the term “royal” to describe the hue of this ring isn't just in reference to its color. One of the most famous sapphire pieces is Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement rings! Hence the correlation with the word nobility.

Topaz

Topaz stones are available in an especially wide range of colors. This stone is pleochroic, which means it can show an array of various hues when viewed from different angles. A naturally occurring blue topaz is rare to find. On the other hand, a colorless topaz is easily accessible and is commonly used to give a blue hue to the gemstone. This is why the stone can appear in a variety of blues ranging from an icy, pale hue to a deep, saturated shade. This particular blue topaz is the birthstone for December and is one of the most sought after gemstones. Topaz is often viewed as the stone of love and loyalty. More specifically, a blue topaz symbolizes clarity, honesty, and strong emotional connection.

Tanzanite

Tanzanites are a somewhat recently discovered gemstone. They were only first identified in 1967 near Mount Kilimanjaro. This monumental landmark is the only place where tanzanites can be found. The color of this gemstone is caught between a blue and violet hue. Similar to topaz, the tanzanite is pleochroic. When shown from different angles and in various lighting, the stone gives off distinct colors ranging from a violet-blue to blue-violet. A year after its initial discovery in the 60s, Tiffany’s & Co. gave the stone the name tanzanite and ran a campaign introducing it to the public. Tanzanites immediately became an immensely desirable stone and are still highly sought after today. These stones are one of the birthstones for December and are known for symbolizing calmness and communication.

Aquamarine

As its name presumes, the term aquamarine derives from the Latin words for seawater. This name is quite fitting as the stone’s transparent blue hue is comparable to the cool ocean water. Aquamarine is a color variation of Beryl, a rare mineral that is also used for emeralds. In relation to its name and coloring, this March birthstone is seen as a good luck charm and was believed to settle harsh waves at sea to keep sailors out of harm. The refreshing light blue gemstone is also said to bring happiness to marriages.

If you’re looking to add blue gemstones to your collection, these four gemstones are a perfect place to start! The alluring colors of each one are more beautiful than the last and wearing any of them is sure to catch wandering eyes. Whether you’re drawn to these stones for their hues, birthstone month, or believed spiritual properties, the beauty of each one is apparent!

How the Tennis Bracelet Got Its Name

How the Tennis Bracelet Got Its Name

Tennis bracelets are widely popular and are a staple jewelry piece in every diamond lovers' collection. These sparkly pieces are an excellent go-to accessory to polish off your looks and make the perfect gifts for special occasions. While most of us are familiar with these delicate bracelets, not everyone knows how this specific jewelry inherited its name. Although we all know these dainty diamond pieces as tennis bracelets, they only adopted the name in the late 70s. Before this, they were known as line diamond bracelets. If you love these bracelets or want to learn a little fun piece of history, keep reading on how the tennis bracelet got its name...

As the name suggests, the tennis bracelet got its name from a tennis match, specifically the U.S. Open. In 1978, legendary tennis player Chris Evert played in the U.S. Open. With her career skyrocketing during this decade, Evert routinely wore diamonds while playing. She was renowned as one of the most stylish women of tennis. One of her most notable accessories was an eternity bracelet that was flexible enough to be worn even during a backhanded shot.

On this day, however, Evert was wearing a gold and diamond bracelet during her match. While playing in an early round of the Open, the clasp of this bracelet broke, and it flew off her wrist. Evert immediately stopped playing and began looking for the broken pieces of her bracelet scattered across the court. She refused to continue the match until she had recovered the jewelry and had officials help her search for the missing pieces. Spectators watched as Evert and game officials scoured the court for her bracelet and eventually found it. This scene became quite a display that drew the attention of jewelers from all across the nation. From this moment forward, these bracelets became known as tennis bracelets.

Chris Evert went on to win the U.S. Open that year for the fourth time and was henceforth known as the originator of the name tennis bracelet. Called the “Ice Maiden,” Evert was just as much of a fashion icon as she was a tennis superstar. Her stylish choice to sport diamonds during matches inspired other players to wear diamond jewelry while on the court for decades to come and still today. If you watch a match today, you’ll spot players such as Serena Williams rocking diamonds while playing!

If you’re inspired by Chris Evert to add a little bling to your looks, an elegant diamond tennis bracket is just what you need. At W.P. Shelton Jewelers, we carry a wonderful and vast selection of tennis bracelets that are perfect for on and off the court! No matter the gold color or occasion, these delicate pieces of jewelry are the perfect accessory for every #SheltonsGirl!

Our Favorite Engagement Ring Styles

Our Favorite Engagement Ring Styles

Your engagement ring is one of the most treasured belongings a person can have. The significance and devotion of an engagement ring make it more than just a piece of jewelry, but a physical representation of undying love and adoration. When it comes to choosing an engagement ring, it’s important to remember it is a piece that will stay with you forever. Style, color, stone, and stone shape are just a few of the elements to consider when searching for the perfect ring. There are so many variations of rings that it can be challenging to decide on one. We’ve put together a collection below of our favorite engagement ring styles. With each style, we can customize it to fit your personality and style preference.

Solitaire

If you’re searching for a ring that exudes refinement while remaining classically neat, consider a solitaire. This ring is the definition of simple but elegant. The essence of solitaire settings is they only have one stone. The clean and simple look of these rings is what makes these rings so popular and timeless. Pair it with a ring guard to change the appearance, or to add a little more sparkle.

Halo / Double Halo

Diamond halo rings have been fast growing in popularity. These bold rings feature a halo (or multiple) of diamonds surrounding the center stone. This style adds more shimmer and composition to the ring. Diamond halos can come in various stone shapes and settings, which is what makes them a favorite. A diamond halo is a great ring to consider if you want a ring that is flushed with diamonds and gives off an eye-catching sparkle. Not to mention they can make the center stone appear larger.

Cathedral Setting

When thinking of well-liked ring styles, a cathedral setting is one of the most classic and ageless variations of engagement rings. This beloved setting option is so popular because it embellishes the stone and makes it appear more prominent. The prong head assembly of this setting accentuates the center stone by holding it high above the band and gives it an emphasized look. A cathedral setting is an excellent option for anyone looking for a timeless but profound ring.

Rough Diamonds

Rough diamonds are those displayed in their natural form. The raw state of these diamonds is what makes this engagement ring style stand out so prominently. These rings are unique and gorgeous, and come in many different colors. They are revered and loved for their natural beauty and textured look that adds character to the ring. If you’re looking for a ring that will stand out amongst others, rough diamonds are for you!

The variety of engagement rings is an extensive list! There are so many factors that go into making each one. Finding the perfect engagement ring can be difficult, but once you’ve discovered the one, you will hold it dear for years to come. We hope this blog helps give you an idea of what engagement ring you might want. If you want to see more styles of engagement rings or looking to buy the perfect one, visit our store or shop our online collection.
